Face Mask For Screening? (by Ray-N-Pa [PA]) Oct 20, 2020 11:44 AM
Message:

So what are your thoughts about someone wearing a face mask when viewing a vacancy?

I had a yahoo that wore one but it looked more like a chin diaper than a mask. I understand the folks who wear the mask - its out of respect. I also understand the folks in less populated areas who do not. What I don't understand those who are somewhere in the middle - you know wearing one in a manner that provides no protection at all.

I suppose this guy thinks he is making a statement - and he is. "I don't want Covid on my chin"

So other than giving me a negative first impression, I am wondering if any of you use a leads mask as a screening tool? --24.101.xxx.xx

Ray, chin diapers just proves that nobody knows what to do. Some people have them under their chin, some people have them under their nose, some people have them up on their forehead. Some people don't wear them at all. Some people spend $50 on them and wear them with gloves. It's just mass confusion. It's the same reason that if you go to 10 different restaurants there are 10 different styles of complying with the restrictions.

Showed my empty rental last month and advised viewers that masks were required, no kids inside, I wait outside for followup questions and we socially distance. Worked fine but all around here are well into the mask wearing in stores, public places and banks, etc. Even the transients who frequent the parks and walk the street are wearing masks. Anyone who doesn't (like when walking for exercise) are given a distance when passing other people. Even my bank asks for a 'quick peek' at my face when handing out money. Makes me think of the old game we played as very young kids that I called, "you show me yours, and I'll show you mine." It's like we are doing something naughty. --72.199.xx.xxx

I have a very elderly Mother In Law...and she is not in good health. Keeping the pandemic away from me is one way of honoring her safety...so I do what I can for her benefit. I'm not so worried about myself...I'm younger and healthy enough that I think I could get over it with proper medical care...but for her it would be a big deal. --99.92.xxx.xxx

I don't think making an assessment on someone NOT wearing one to view a rental is the same as someone coming covered up like the air itself is radioactive.

The general rule of thumbs is "in public". I don't consider viewing a rental as a "public" setting.

I would never impose my will on someone and force them to mask up in a private setting where they are looking to make my place into their home. How selfish of me.

If they are doing a lockbox showing like NE does, then sure, I don't think a mask is required when they are alone in there -- but if they are viewing it with someone else there showing it, then that is different, of course.

If showing a rental in person, I think both should wear a mask. Again, you wear masks to protect the other person. The LL should wear it to protect the potential tenant and the tenant should do it to protect the LL.

(Yes, NE, I know you likely disagree with that. As you said, we've discussed that 1000 times, so let's skip it.)

The question asked was: what about the chin-mask people? Well, I think they are fools basically. But, that's just my opinion. :)

As you said, Ray, people wearing them on their chin or not covering their nose are not doing anything to protect people.

NE says it is because of confusion. I think that is utter garbage. They do it because they, like NE, don't believe in this stuff. They do it as their little form of protest over being required to wear them at all -- they wear them incorrectly.

It isn't because of any confusion. I think they absolutely know that the mask shouldn't be worn that way. They just don't care.

We always wear a mask when close to others but when its just family we don't. We actually avoid crowds if possible-- truth be know I hate people and this is the best excuse ever to stay away from people.

(more masks need to be worn due to rudeness of others coughing and not covering).

I told my wife and family back in April-- during the daily briefing at the while house--- Faucci and the "scarf women" are really starting to like the lime light and appear to be saying really outrageous things to stay on TV.

Do you believe in the whole mask thing?

If not, then does it matter to you if they wear one at all?

NE, I think the whole restaurant idea and the fact that they are still allowing bars to be open and other things that create revenue like ball games and houses are being sold like crazy, just proves to me that COVID really doesn't matter to the government or others either when it comes to revenue or making money. They are both absurdities and an overreaction. I still can't believe how many people are still under the spell of this after eight months. Unbelievable. Especially landlords, a landlord should be able to take this information and call the bluff on this in no time.

If I was a tenant and went to view an apartment that was empty or a house and the landlord was staying outside and had the audacity to tell me to put a mask on before I went in, I would either leave or wear one if I did another situations but I certainly would not rent from this person. David, you said:

" The CDC order is not for health and safety but to maintain housing. To which only funding for rent is needed"

I have to respectfully disagree as it has been stated many times that the eviction moratoriums are to keep people from being in shelters or moving around and spreading COVID. Besides that, the CDC is a health organization.

Because they are all doing these things in the name of COVID and so called public safety, I also think that it is the same thing.

However, if I were a prospective tenant and I were asked to wear a mask at a showing then I would out of respect but, if I was doing a single showing and someone was not wearing one then I wouldn't care. Not multiple showings though as that could lead to trouble.

Masks and eviction moratoriums are totally separate things.

There are many other countries where wearing a mask is a normal thing in flu season. Japan for example. If you have any cold or flu symptoms, you wear a mask to hopefully avoid spreading it to those around you that you cannot avoid coming into contact with.

My ENT has been requiring masks of people if they have symptoms of anything for years. Same with my GP. It DOES help stop the spread of the random virus going around.

My day job employer mandates that we wear masks on campus. Period. Unless you have your very own private office you can close the door to and keep everyone out, they require a mask. Just how it is. As a result, our college campus numbers are not at all bad. We still have in person classes.

Meanwhile, the town has numbers of all kinds of stuff rising, both flu and Covid-19.

We also encourage hand washing like crazy. Because it works.

When showing an apartment, I bring wrapped, disposable masks, as well as alcohol based hand wipes, and cleaning wipes. I ask everyone to wear a mask. No mask, no entry. I offer hand wipes. After we are done, I wipe down the doorknobs and light switches.

I'm doing showings of places that people are currently living, so it is a courtesy to them.

Masks don't prevent transmission of any virus, but they do help slow it down. The number one thing, though, is washing your hands with soap and water. --67.43.xxx.xxx

" keep people from being in shelters or moving around"

That is the definition of making sure they have housing.

The process of BEING EVICTED and MOVING does not cause spread.

Further, an eviction moratorium is NOT necessary to achieve, even if you call it a health objective, stable housing. rent assistance, $$$$ in hand, is all thats needed.

It is not the process of eviction (setout by sheriff) that cause spread. It is the subsequent loss of housing that cause spread.

Actually only 50% of people need to wear a mask. My reasoning: If you wear a mask then I don't need one. If you cough your mask will contain the virus. If I cough your mask will protect you!

I'm in the camp that thinks mask are useless. I have three dear friends who all wear masks religiously (He's a pastor, his wife is a pastors wife, and their daughter, daughter of a pastor) hence religiously. They all three caught Covid. The wife almost died. Their masks didn't work. Thankfully they are all well now.

Yes, Covid is real and can be deadly. But, we cannot allow it to control our lives. The original advice to prevent getting Covid was; Wash your hands, and don't touch your face! That should be how we live our lives. So, nope; I won't be wearing a mask at a showing. If you want to, your choice. I am not afraid. --174.67.xx.xxx

OKHMBLDR, it's not JUST masks. Limiting time indoors with people outside your bubble, staying APART from people outside your bubble are also part of the process.

And no, a cloth mask of my face does not protect me or you as much as our BOTH wearing a mask - so that there is double protection.

Risk of infection seems to indicate that the initial viral load inhaled is key to how sick you will get, if you get it. So being indoors, being close to an infected person's exhalations - even wearing a mask - is the big deal. That's why the majority of infections these days seems to be coming out of indoor restaurants, bars and dormitories. --50.82.xxx.xxx

So, back to the original question. I think people wearing masks wrong are more a result of struggling with the discomfort of wearing them. I have some of the "free" ones that I paid for with taxes and they are several layers thick, hot, get sticky after a very few minutes, and don't let air pass well. Rather than wearing it wrong, I just cut out all but one layer, much better when I have to wear one so I don't get accosted.

What about wearing an ultra thin nylon, or a face shield correctly? Are they any more compliant? What about someone who shows up gloved, suited, wearing a positive pressure respirator? Will they be a better tenant? Not sure I can tell if someone is submissive and/or going to be a problem by simply wearing a chin diaper. I would be more concerned with the one fully suited up, likely they would be one of those convinced that every fly speck is black mold. --64.130.xx.xxx

OKHMBLDR: That isn't how masks work. Data shows that masks mainly protect OTHER people FROM the one wearing it. So, it is not a matter of "just one of the two needs to wear it." It is not accurate that if someone else is wearing their mask and you cough that they are protected. Again, that just isn't how it works and the scientific data backs it up.

Again, masks primarily protect OTHERS from the person wearing it.

I'm not surprised at all that you think they are "useless" because you clearly don't understand how they work or what their intent is.
