Where's the wave? (by RentsDue [MA]) Oct 19, 2020 10:21 PM
Message:

Housing advocates have been crying about how the end of the MA eviction moratorium would create a " wave of evictions". They said the CDC moratorium is not strong enough to help the 60,000- 100,000 families that would be put out on the street if it was not extended. It exprired a few days ago. I looked at the state housing website and ( statewide) I only see about a dozen cases filed since.

You shouldn’t expect to see the cases filed today but in 14 days. I had two notices served today and my constable told me he didn’t have a lot to serve, I thought he was going to be super busy. One those served sent me a text tonight asking if it was a real eviction notice. --66.30.xx.xx

There is an expression, "Preach what you pray". The largest owner of rental property in my City, Los Angeles, California, is the City itself.

When one of their tenants can't pay the landlord the rent, the City will ask the State and Federal programs to give financial assistance to the tenant, in other words, pay the rent to the City.

When one of my tenants won't pay the rent, the City says, "well that's too bad since your tenant has 1 years to Start paying back rent, after the Governor delairs the pandemic is over"! --47.155.xx.xxx

There is no wave and there will be no wave. Contrary to what vote-buying politicians say, land lords are not going to throw out 100% of their tenants the day moratoriums are lifted. We will adjust and adapt, keeping the ones who can/will pay and gradually evicting those who cannot/will not and filling with qualified tenants. But not until we get the only tool we have to enforce our contract.

"Thou shalt not STEAL" should be the guiding principle behind this entire farce. Make no mistake: The Govt is stealing our rights from us, which in turn allow tenants to steal housing from us.

If there's one lesson this mess has taught me, it is this: Reps and Dems do not care about land lords or small businesses. The President isn't going to fix our businesses: he started this insane shut down/no eviction mess! And if elected the Dems are certainly going to pillage us to fill all the empty tax revenue coffers this shut down created.

Ever considered Libertarians? "You're throwing away your vote!"....Heh, I would say the same to anyone who votes for T or B. --107.216.xxx.xxx

There logic would make since if there was a shelter in place order.

Meaning no home sales, no move outs and no move ins.

If someone buys a house, there is still the 8 person team helping them move in. Granted only 3 people are doing the work but the other 5 are buy spreading germs --24.101.xxx.xx

Ray you are right. Without a shelter-in-place order the eviction moratorium makes no sense at all. --50.82.xxx.xxx

And so it is and here we are, something has to give.

I, for one, would rather have no eviction ban (or any other govt regulation on businesses), but have financial aid coming from higher personal income taxes. I made the general case for that kind of trade-off well before the pandemic but I was mocked.

What is the libertarian answer? Herd immunity? --50.4.xxx.x

It’s been so long, I can’t quite remember.

WHO started the whole state to state trend to ban evictions?

I remember shelter in place and don’t go out in public, but how did our leaders decide that renters did not have to pay rent?

I realize some governors did this to get votes but I wonder if renters Even consider that when voting. My guess is they felt they were entitled so the current governor probably did not gain votes.

In my state the current governor will probably lose votes because he did not get the unemployment checks rolling.

We have evicted four, and another 10 moved out for legit attrition reasons such as buying a house or moving back with parents. None of these 14 people are living in a box on the sidewalk.

No one said you can’t go out and buy a house. How sales are running wild in my town.

It is easier to enact UNFUNDED mandates like an eviction moratorium than to FUND aid to renters that require tax hikes. There are so many renters out there it's impossible for governors of either party to ignore them.

I've been saying this for a long time ... you can either get it up front with government meddling in your business OR on the backend with the government taking a slice of your PERSONAL income. Me? I'll take the latter every day of the week and twice on sundays. --50.4.xxx.x
