Totally off topic of anything related to PM... well a little anyways.

How do you feel about visible tattoos in the work place? Would you hire a PM that has tattoos? Do you think that they hinder a person from doing a good job?

Personally I used to think visible tattoos are inappropriate for most jobs. That being said I have also realized I have gotten old. The younger generation doesn't seem bothered by them. I don't think having them makes a person a poor employee bit could influence the opinion of your clientel.

I guess at this point you need to decide who your market is. If your catering to older people you may want to carefully consider a visible tattoo but if your market is a younger demographic I would be less concerned.

Nobody seems to care anymore. I won't rent to anyone with prison tattoos or tattoos on the face..... not specifically because they have tattoos, but I will find a way to screen them out very easily. It's my clue that they have very bad judgement and possibly a felony record.

I see a lot of badly done tattoos, carelessly placed, on my low income applicants.

Really good tattoos with artistic merit cost a lot of money and I occasionally see those on my middle class applicants, but not where they would be visible in business attire, except for the full sleeves.

So even though they are widely accepted, there is still a very obvious class and education level distinction with tattoos.

You also have to consider what is normal locally.

Where I moved from, only far-gone meth heads and the homeless have untidy beards. Where I moved to, almost all the vocational type workers have huge mountain man beards and they are decent people. I had to get over my idea that anyone with a nasty looking beard is a criminal doper.

I still think the beards look awful, like they would be full of bugs and last week's soup, but I'm now quick to hire those people if I can get them. --76.178.xx.xx

No face tattoos. Or at least, I've never seen a face tattoo I would accept. Neck tattoos too.

But just in the past few years, tattoos have been more and more and more normal. My only issue with them is this: if they are well-done and colorful (not all black or faded navy ink like a prison tattoo) then they are expensive. So now I have to look at the prospect's finances and how they handle them.

If they can afford those tattoos, fine. If it looks like they've poured tons of money into tattoos and very little into the rest of the life...next. --50.82.xxx.xxx

I read the teardrops mean they killed someone so tread carefully when you evaluate them. Back away slowly. I always cringe when I see them or piercings. Although I have pierced ears and a nice boy stopped dating me in high school when I got that. His mother made him stop. I did it so I could wear earrings and my mother had pierced ears. Those clip things really hurt. --71.104.xx.xxx

BUT...I did have a Tenant who just left us, after living at two different places of ours. Lovely young woman. Piercings, tattoos, ear gauges (not too big.) Just a hint of hot pink or turquoise green hair now and again.

She left because she got a huge promotion and had to move to another city. She's been with the same company since 2006, starting as a cashier but moving up through the ranks.

So can't always judge a book by its cover. --50.82.xxx.xxx

Teen Says Tattoo Covering Half His Face Is Making it Hard to Find Work

Mark Cropp just wants to to get a job and support his family, but something unique is holding him back. A giant tattoo saying “DEVAST8” covers half of his face, and, perhaps not surprisingly, it’s off-putting for potential employers . . .

NYPOST

Comments: I don’t understand why these hateful companies won’t hire this upstanding member of the community. Must be racism...or something.

I lived in San Francisco for years. Whenever I went to a restaurant or store where they hired staff with facial tatoos and metal piercings and spiked orange hair, I just never went back. I is smart for businesses not to hire these offensive looking people. The reality is they do cause a drop in business. It is shame the young people doing it are so oblivious to how their repulsive looks make it difficult for people put off by them to have to look at their face and deal with them. --201.140.xxx.xx

Thinking back, every single person I've met, dealt with as a contractor, hired or rented to that had a bunch of tattoos, especially on the neck and hands turned out to be a flake. Some were serious flakes. All were worthless and trouble.

Good recent example this week: I considered hiring a "handyman" for some work. He showed up looking like a slob, huge tattoo on his neck saying "Why so serious" in letters at least 3 inches high. Tattoos on both hands. Proceeds to quote $350 for a job worth about $50 bragging "I'm expensive" and "I often make $3000-$4000 a day". When I asked about insurance he dodged the question but bragged he paid $350 a month for insurance. When I asked about any licenses, he said he had an LLC and a DBA license from the city. NEXT! I would not waste 10 seconds on somebody like this. --24.180.xx.xx

I have one... on my foot that says the word Believe and it has 2 stars. one with my birthstone color and one with my sons.

Last night, I went and got one on my forearm that has water color behind it and the word Strength and a Cross at the end and then there are 2 ribbons. 1 green one to honor my son's spinal cord injury and a white one in memorial of my mom that I lost to lung cancer.

Everything about it means the world to me.

When I had my manufacturing business I found that tattooed people are less productive and it spreads less productive behavior to other employees. The topic of discussion was their tattoos from both parties, where’d you got it, the cost and was it painful. I learned my lesson and I figured out tattoo people need to work in tattoo parlors. --99.23.xxx.x

years ago, sitting on a stool at the counter of my favorite diner, I looked over at a booth and saw a stunning young woman in shorts and flip flops.

this was WAY BEFORE all this tattoo stuff,.....and WAY WAY BEFORE men had to be as careful and politically correct about approaching a woman as we do today.

on the outside of her ankle was a gorgeous tattoo of a rose with stem and leaves.

she saw me staring at it, our eyes met, she smiled and introduced herself. ----

long story short,....when she was a young girl just starting to ride a two wheel bike, she tore up her ankle on the gears/chain real bad,....30 something stitches and a bad scar.

at 19 she had the rose done ! --172.250.xx.xxx

Fishsticks, that's different. And your mom is with you and probably trying to get you to hear what she is saying to give you a heads up now and then. My dad speaks in my left ear and I have a 60 percent hearing loss in that ear in the low ranges which is probably why I can hear or perceive these messages. No other interference. Try an ear plug. Not sure it will help but maybe. Right side of the brain is the psychic and social side but we are cross wired so left ear stimuli go to right brain. --71.104.xx.xxx

We all have our opinions but I don't think tattoos are racist, let's create another group for equality to understand coping systems -tattooist- would be the best way to describe this phenomenon and each will have a discussion of justification, like BMW motorcycle enthusiasts don't understand crotch rocket riding methods nor Harley motorcycle riders. I don't really care about tattoos much. But our former church did hire a guy for a pastoral position. He was with the church for something like 5 years before he started wearing short sleeves that revealed his "sleeve" tattoos. I'm guessing that at the time he was hired, a lot of people would have been turned off by them.

Now? He's the lead pastor, and nobody cares. --96.227.xxx.xxx

I believe Colorado is ranked #1 in the country for tattoo parlors. (Or close to it) So given that, the culture and acceptance here is high. And actually if they’re done well it’s almost a status symbol, as they are quite expensive.

The USMC revised its tattoo policy several times, the most recent being in 2020. Before that the regs. were revised in 2007. Prior to 2007 we were allowed to have “sleeves”, after 2007 “sleeves” that were visible below the standard issue green on green PT uniform were no longer allowed, individual tattoos that were not “sleeves” were allowed. The new regs. for 2020 have no restrictions for tattoos that can be completely hidden under a PT uniform, with the exception that all tattoos whether visible or not, cannot be racial, vulgar, gang related, bring discredit to the naval service, etc, etc. Visible tattoos must be no larger than the Marines hand, and they can have only a total of 4 visible tattoos with a PT uniform on. No tattoos are allowed on the hands, within two inches of the wrist bones on the arm, or within two inches of the elbow or knee. Obviously that’s only a quick summary of the new regs. --173.48.xxx.xxx
