Bathroom odor (by Bev[AL])

My renter says he and his wife have noticed a slight odor in the half bath in the rental house. The full bath seems fine and there's no odor there. He says they think it seems to come from the washbasin. Sounds like it's not terrible, but they worry about when they have visitors.

The house is on a septic system, but if it were the septic, wouldn't both bathrooms have a problem?

Any ideas of what this might be and what to do? --199.174.151.211

If truly only in the one bath and the sink is the problem would check to be sure the trap is there and that it is not leaking. If the water runs out of the trap than you would get septic smell in the bowel. Maybe just some chlorox down the trap over night would end the problem. Sometimes unused sinks need to be flushed. --200.58.4.63

It's possible if the plumbing was not vented correctly that when the toilet flushes it is pulling the water out of a "p" trap. It could be a new seal is needed around a toilet. It could be, like Dan said, if they're not using that bathroom very often that periodically they should run some water to make sure the p trap has water in it. They sell some stuff you can pour in the p trap (smells like oranges) that might help. --66.76.130.112

Radar-

I usually agree with your advise, but I personally would be happy if a tenant reported a sewer gas problem to me. It could be the sign of something much deeper, especially with the freezing weather alot of us have had.

It warrents a 2nd look at least. --12.215.193.121

Thanks for the advice. They had already put a Renuzit in there, but I'd like to get it solved anyhow. Just a little mystified about what the cause is.

We'll try the suggestions. At least they seem to be very clean, for which I'm grateful. --165.121.236.202

Take the trap off and clean it. Also clean the pipe above that holds the stopper. You

d be surprised at the slimy guck that builds up in there. --152.163.252.193

Tim, I only said that in jest. Sometimes, some people are more sensitive to some odors when others aren't.

I would assume that this half-bath is in cramped quarters and any odor will be magnified. This odor could be coming from the rim of the toilet, between the tank and bowl, or hair and gunk hangin' up in the sink drain.

Very unlikely (but possible) that the drain got sucked dry. There could even be dampness in the floor or wall causing an unusual odor. Check things out, and you can always suggest the Glade as a backup plan. --68.53.193.212

Could the wax ring on the toilet need replacement? Believe it or not - that has happened in our home and a new wax ring was all it took. --64.7.186.180
