Does anyone know how to kill a dog scent left in the apartment? We have extensively cleaned the carpets and aired out the apartment but we can't seem to get the dog scent out. Any ideas. --69.140.134.79

Better make sure all the sh** is gone first. Check the basement and ducts - above the ducts and inside registers. Sometimes tenants put the stuff there to make it hard for you to find. I had one tenant that I wanted out and they had a dog. I put some on the top of the ducts in a few places and when they complained I said it's your dog, figure it out. They moved the next month. --63.107.135.116

Dog smell will usually air out if it is cleaned up. Rent a strong black light and look for urine on the walls and in the carpet. Probably what you are smelling is urine that got down into your carpet padding. --216.228.163.41

Could it be a little bit of imagination at play here, I have seen people complain of animal aromas when in fact no animal was involved and several other people could not smell anything (this was a new tenant) and you just cleaned after a known animal being present (cleaning usually suffices after cleaning suspected DOG aromas) sure it is not you and the imagination playing tricks. --152.163.252.193

Rip up pad and dispose of. Clean floor with something strong like bleach. Let dry then paint floor with oil based paint. Then put new pad down and lay new carpet over top. Use black lite to see any urine on walls and clean off. As said I always find a bunch of dog pooe in the vents along with everything else and tons of air. I use a shop vac and a long long hose and shove it up vents until I can see it at the nest vent and so on until those vents are cleaned out. Good luck to you. --64.12.116.204

What kind of dog smell is it?

Urine?

Or just a doggy odor.

For the doggy odor I would recommend a product you can buy thru wilmar.com

It is called dual odor eliminator it works very well in the removal of odors.

The item #is 99-0505 --207.69.137.37

We use "Nature's Miracle." It's an enzyme that breaks down dog pee so even the dogs can't smell it.

I second the black light. We got one once to track down what one of our new dogs was doing once. Under the black light, the dining room looked like a murder scene! --192.240.0.203

I have heard to purchase charcoal for a barbacue grill and cut open the bag and leave in the home for a while. Maybe a few bags if the smell is real bad. Mark. --209.86.113.220

EcoQuest International has a machine that eliminates ANY odor, especially pet urine. It is amazing! It ELIMINATES any odor permanently. Even gets rid of mold, bacteria, dust, etc. I ran across it and loved the machine enough that I became a distributor. If you would like information on them, let me know.- brent@brentmelvin.com --24.123.174.27

#102 why you shouldn't allow pets. If you've cleaned the carpet and still smell a pet the only solution that I have found is replace the carpet and pad. Odds are you will see the stain when you pull it out. In fact it may still feel wet under there. --66.76.130.112

We had the smae problem.Pulled up the carpet and pad.(Still wet after being empty about a year)We let the floor dry and painted it about three times with Kilz. Then new crpet and pad was installed.Don't forget to change the furnace filter. When they are filthy they just blow the bad smell all over.We got PlugIns too. --67.167.64.207

Just went through the same thing, however, the carpet was very old and in need of replacement. Just removing the carpet and pad wasn't enough. You must wash thoroughly with bleach solution, then use oil based Kilz to seal the floor, then put down new carpet and pad. --65.238.85.101

Just a question: I know it is more expensive initially, but in the long run, it sure seems like tile would be the best thing to have in a rental. It is durable and easy to clean and if you pick something neutral, it never goes out of style. Why don't more rentals have tile? (alot in FL do, but I would think more would have it.) Plus, with tile, you might be more willing to rent to folks with dogs. Another thing I saw (on this website's pet page) was to put plastic between the carpet and the pad. Then steam cleaning would be enough to clean the carpet and the plastic protects the pad. Don't know if anyone here has actually tried that trick. --130.181.95.128
