| I have a property with 4 garbage cans serving 6 units. It was previously 3 cans, but garbage was always overflowing, so we added another one. If anything, they overflow even more. We have since determined that neighbors are freeloading and using our cans for dumping their stuff. We even had a sofa dumped that did not belong to anyone in the building. Unfortunately the only place for the cans is right on a busy street, and the area is not the best. I am going to enlist neighbors to watch and report what they see so we can prosecute freeloaders, and put up a sign to the effect that they are being watched. Any other suggestions? --63.80.251.76 |

If you know who it is I would put it on their porch with a note saying "You must have misplaced this so I am being neighborly and returning it to you. Have a great day." . --12.66.64.45 |
| Radar has a sweet surveilance system installed. Maybe you can, too. --204.17.16.253 |
| sounds like you need one of radar/john's camera set-ups.... --152.163.252.193 |
| Padlocks on the cans, and I second the surveillance idea. Cameras are on my list o' things to buy in 2004! --12.38.198.125 |

We used to have the same problem here, but it was residents from a nearby up-scale development dumping in our dumpsters. We put a padlock supplied by the garbage company on the dumpster, but tenants would leave the padlock open. Then non-residents would toss the padlock in the dumpsters. Since the cops started walking the area regularly (for other reasons) the problem has abated. --216.239.160.71 |
| I had the same problem, what I did was inform the garbage collection people they went through the garbage and identified the culprits. They were cited by the city for theft. I also had the placement of my garbage moved to a new location away from the neighbors. apparently the new location was too far for them to travel. --209.112.176.241 |

Another vote for a locking dumpster. Sean --63.198.19.3 |

I had that with my dumpster and the only suggestion the trash service manager had was the chain and lock which meant every tenant would have to have a key. "NO Way!" I started going through it and my daughter bought me a shirt that said dumpster diver. Anyway I found a bag with some out of town names and caught a guy that was actually collecting money from people to haul their trash off and was bringing it to my dumpster. I've finally brought it under control by moving the dumpster under some street lights between to of my rent houses. I put no dumping allowed and no trespassing signs all around. I put out letters and told all the renters that I was going to have the first person that was caught prosecuted. I told them to be sure and tell their family and friends to stay away because there was no exceptions. I then offered them a $25 reward for any info leading to someones prosecution. Acutally I'm not sure what the police would do but they did call the one guy and make hime come get his trash out. I checked it out to see if it's working and sent my son in law down with some trash. Well it wasn't until the next 1st of the month but it finally did get reported. Now there's still some room even when renters are moving out and cleaning out their junk. --66.76.130.112 |
| Thanks for all the info. I've seen reference to Radar and his wonderful gadgets in prior postings. Where can I get information on them? --66.233.81.192 |

Throw in the "freeloading" trashy neighbor and hire Radar and his cat to "compact" your dumpster! I actually staked out one of our dumsters. When the offender showed up that evening(only 20 minutes after we closed), I snuck up, lit a string of firecrackers, and threw them in the dumster, yelling "RUN IT'S GONNA BLOW!!!!" Wish I had a video camera. No more problems from that particular neighbor. I hear you, and have no real permament suggestions short of Neighbor Ternimation. It's a continual battle. We call it Dumster Wars. --12.180.42.46 |
