Help! I have a major cat urine odor problem in one of my rental units. The smell in coming from one of the bathrooms where the litter box was located. It appears the cat (female) has missed the litter box and the urine has gotten on the walls and linoleum tile. How would I go about getting rid of the odor? Thanks. --158.70.106.107

I think part of that urine is from the former male tenant. The Female cat would not be spraying on the walls. Male cats do that.

Go to Wal-Mart and buy a black light. Go in bathroom and close door and turn off regular lights and if it is good and dark turn on black light. Boy Oh boy are you going to be surprised at what you see. Now go to the kitchen just for fun?. Mark the area's with masking tape or something. Now Personal I have gave up fighting it. I just rip out all the floor tiles and remove the section of wall that is soaked with urine. I then inspect subfloor. If is is soaked I just cut it out. Build a box to lay new floor on and retile. Put back new wall and be done with it. Smell is gone because all damaged and urine soaked tile, subfloor and wall is in the trash. Goodluck. --152.163.252.193

I had that happen to me once 15 yrs ago. I no longer accept pets - no ifs ands or buts.

I ripped everything down to the plywood sitting on the floor joist and polyurithane the wood - this seals the wood forever - no more cat or dog urine smell.

I learned this after trying 10 other ways to remove the smell - nothing worked - so I called those people who go into a house after a fire and treat the house so theres no more fire smell - they told me they would do the job for $1,000.00

I asked how they would treat the wood to remove the smell - they said they would use polyurathane. I nevered hired them but I bought it some at the home depot and painted the floor with it and bingo it worked like a charm.

good luck !!!!!! --67.83.119.17

The only way to get rid of cat urine odor is to completly remove the area that was soaked by the urine. There are rumors that vinegar works, but I have found over time the odor comes back. I would recommend removing the flooring. If the subfloor is wood the above recomendation would work. If the subfloor is cement, scrub with bleach. Let air out for a few days and then seal the cement with a good thick laquer or Kilz paint. Then, reinstall flooring. And I would do as recommended above and check the walls. If any of the urine seeped up into the drywall, you would need to cut it out and replace it to truly get rid of the odor. Good Luck! --66.60.177.109

I've had good luck with the enzyme cleaners like odorxit, but I use a brand I buy locally at a janitorial supply house. --68.226.186.203

I have used Nature's Miracle--it's an enzyme cleaner--hen we painted the floors. I would do as other's suggested and rip out the urine areas and redo--it's the only way to truly get rid of the smell for good. Female cats spray too--that's why mine is now living in a warm cozy garage instead of our house. --207.112.224.21

White vinegar full strength applied to area. Use black light to see or just treat the whole area if you can't get light.

I bought a house that was damaged severely by cat. Bank wasn't sure they would loan. The enzyme treatment the seller paid for failed.

We used several gallons of white vinegar and it has been 6.5 years. No smell! Even my cats don't react.

My other house had linoleum flooring and I used bleach for years until I found out about vinegar.

Had other house that walls and carpet were damaged by cat. Used vinegar in 1999. Was down there last month and no smell. --66.81.20.254
